Priests take new assignments |
Fr. Picos also was ordained in 2006 in Salt Lake City; his first assignment was at Christ the King Parish in Cedar City, but for the last nine months he has been a parochial vicar at Saint Joseph Parish in Ogden. In Cedar City, he worked with both the Anglo and Hispanic communities "because Msgr. Mike (Winterer, the pastor) has a vision that we are only one Church." Teaching English as a Second Language to parishioners in Cedar City "was really good because that program helped to bring together both communities," he added. |
"One Of the things that I really enjoyed was to build, with Fr. Mike, that community. When I was there, we worked together to build the community and I think that was the best thing that I did." He learned the importance of taking the time to get to know parishioners from his time in Cedar City, and he also plans to carry a lesson from Ogden to his new assignment as pastor of Saint George Parish in St. George. "One of the things I would like to take from here is the kindness of Fr. Ken (Vialpando, pastor of St. Joseph). He's really kind with the people and I think if I can do that, people are going to trust, I people are going to come and talk to me," Fr. Picos said. St. George Parish is very large, still growing and is responsible for two missions, |
as well as a prison ministry, Msgr. Fitzgerald said. The population is diverse, with reti:red people who' have moved from other areas, many service workers, tourists, and students at Dixie College's Newman Center, as well as numerous nursing homes. |
' Fr. Picos and his assistant, the Rev. Mister Nguyen, who will be ordained a priest this month, "will be a very good team," Msgr. Fitzgerald said. "They will bring enthusiasm, new ideas and focus, and I just think they will energize people." |
